The Liberia 20 Dollars 2001 silver coin from the Legends of the Rails series celebrates Union Pacific No. 119, one of the most famous locomotives in American railroad history. The reverse presents the steam locomotive in remarkable detail: a large circular smokebox door and headlamp dominate the front, while a tall smokestack releases flowing smoke. The engine features a cowcatcher, boiler, domes, bell, cab with arched windows, tender, large spoked driving wheels, smaller leading wheels, connecting rods, pipes and mechanical fittings. Rails, ballast, stones, grasses and distant hills complete the scene. Union Pacific No. 119 is remembered for its role at the 1869 Golden Spike ceremony at Promontory Summit, marking completion of the first transcontinental railroad. The obverse displays Liberia’s coat of arms with sailing ship, waves, palm tree, rising sun, plow, shovel and flying bird, framed by ribbons, the national motto, divided 2001 date and decorative rim. This silver railway collectible unites American transport history with finely rendered numismatic art.
