The 2001 Liberia 20 Dollars GMAM-Garratt “Black Beauty” silver coin from the Legends of the Rails theme celebrates a remarkable articulated steam locomotive and the golden age of railway engineering. The reverse presents the massive locomotive in full side profile, with its long boiler, cab, chimney, articulated engine sections, numerous driving wheels, rods and detailed mechanical undercarriage resting on railway tracks. Above the train are sweeping linear elements, while below appears a miniature landscape of rocks, trees, shrubs and small plants. Garratt locomotives were designed with separate powered units supporting a central boiler, an arrangement valued for combining substantial pulling power with flexibility on challenging railway routes. The obverse features Liberia’s national coat of arms: a sailing ship on waves, palm tree, rising sun, flying bird and plow, framed by ribbons, the divided 2001 date and a decorative rim. A distinctive silver collectible combining trains, transportation history and mechanical engineering.
