The Liberia 20 Dollars 2001 Year of the Snake silver Proof coin combines Chinese zodiac symbolism with the national imagery of Liberia. The reverse is dominated by a finely engraved coiled snake, its long body forming overlapping curves covered with individually rendered scales. The raised head displays a detailed eye, nostril, mouth and forked tongue, while a large Chinese zodiac character appears above. Around the border are the years 1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989 and 2001, identifying successive Years of the Snake, with the denomination below. In Chinese zodiac tradition, the snake is associated with wisdom, intuition, intelligence and subtlety. The obverse features Liberia’s elaborate coat of arms: a sailing ship on waves, palm tree, rising sun, plow, shovel and flying bird, surrounded by ornamental ribbons, the national motto and divided 2001 date. Struck in silver with a brilliant Proof finish, this attractive zodiac issue combines wildlife, lunar-calendar symbolism and world numismatics.
