A new coin, a capsule.
The 2005 Liberia 10 Dollars “World Youth Day Cologne” gilded silver coin commemorates the major Catholic gathering held in Cologne, Germany, and associated with Pope Benedict XVI. Its rectangular design presents an elaborate religious composition: the soaring twin Gothic towers and intricate façade of Cologne Cathedral are highlighted in gold, beside a large gilded Christian cross inset with vivid green crystal elements. Below appears the papal coat of arms with mitre and crossed keys, while the inscriptions identify World Youth Day, Cologne 2005 and Benedict XVI. The reverse displays Liberia’s national coat of arms with a three-masted sailing ship, palm tree, rising sun, flying bird, plow, shield and ribbons, accompanied by the 10 Dollars denomination and 2005 date. World Youth Day 2005 was especially significant as the first such international gathering attended by Benedict XVI after his election as pope. Combining Christianity, cathedral architecture, papal symbolism, gilding and crystal decoration, this unusual silver issue makes a distinctive religious collectible.
