The Liberia 20 Dollars 2001 silver coin from the Legends of the Rails series celebrates the historic Seraing steam locomotive, capturing the character of early railway engineering in an exceptionally detailed design. The reverse depicts a distinctive articulated steam engine with two boiler sections, tall flared smokestacks releasing billowing clouds of smoke, steam domes, pipes, cylinders, connecting rods, numerous spoked wheels, coupling equipment and a rear tender. Rails and a textured track bed complete the railway scene, emphasizing the locomotive’s complex mechanical construction. Seraing, Belgium, became an important European center of heavy industry and locomotive manufacture during the expansion of rail transport. The obverse features Liberia’s national coat of arms with a sailing ship on waves, palm tree, rising sun, plow, shovel and flying bird, surrounded by ornamental ribbons, the national motto, divided 2001 date and segmented border. Struck in silver with bright prooflike surfaces, this unusual railway issue combines industrial heritage, transportation history and collectible artistry.
