A new coin, a capsule.
The 2002 Liberia 20 Dollars Ratification of the 19th Amendment silver Proof coin commemorates a landmark in United States political and civil-rights history: the constitutional amendment that prohibited denial of voting rights on the basis of sex. The reverse presents a symbolic voting scene with a woman in period dress placing a ballot into a ballot box, while four other women stand behind her. Their early-20th-century dresses, coats and distinctive hats evoke the era of the American suffrage movement, while three United States flags rise prominently in the background. Ratified in 1920, the 19th Amendment represented the culmination of decades of organized campaigning for women’s suffrage in the United States. The obverse displays Liberia’s coat of arms with sailing ship, ocean waves, palm tree, rising sun, flying bird and plow, surrounded by ribbons, the divided 2002 date and geometric rim border. Struck in silver with a reflective Proof finish, this historical issue combines politics, voting rights and women’s history in an expressive collectible design.
