The 2001 Liberia 20 Dollars GMAM-Garratt “Black Beauty” silver coin from the Legends of the Rails theme celebrates the imposing articulated steam locomotive and classic railway engineering. The reverse depicts the locomotive in a detailed side view, showing its elongated boiler, cab, chimney with a plume of smoke, articulated sections, numerous wheels, connecting rods, mechanical running gear and railway track. Long sweeping lines cross the background, while beneath the train a miniature landscape contains rocks, a leafy tree, smaller trees, shrubs and plants. Garratt locomotives were distinguished by their articulated construction, which combined considerable hauling power with flexibility for difficult railway routes. The obverse displays Liberia’s national coat of arms with a three-masted sailing ship, waves, palm tree, rising sun, flying bird and plow, surrounded by flowing ribbons, the divided 2001 date and a patterned border. A striking silver piece for collectors of steam trains, railway history, transport and engineering themes.
