A new coin, a capsule.
The 2005 Liberia 10 Dollars “Sede Vacante” silver Proof coin is a distinctive religious commemorative marking the vacancy of the Holy See following the death of Pope John Paul II. Its unusual cross-shaped design gives the issue an immediately recognizable character. The reverse features a large Christian cross set with faceted crystal elements and outlined in gold, while below appears the gilded Sede Vacante emblem with the ceremonial umbrella and crossed keys of Saint Peter. Radiating lines surround the emblem, with “SEDE VACANTE” and the Roman date MMV completing the composition. The obverse continues the cross-shaped format and displays Liberia’s coat of arms: a sailing ship, palm tree, rising sun, plow and coastal landscape within a shield, framed by ribbons. The 10 DOLLARS denomination and 2005 date appear below. Struck in silver with a Proof finish, selective gilding and decorative crystal inserts, this unusual coin combines Catholic history, papal symbolism, Christian art and innovative modern numismatic design.
