The 2005 Liberia 10 Dollars is a Proof silver commemorative marking the election of Pope Benedict XVI and the beginning of his pontificate. The central design portrays Benedict XVI in papal vestments with a prominent pectoral cross, raising both arms in greeting and blessing. Behind him rises the monumental façade of St. Peter’s Basilica with its great dome, architectural details and the sweeping colonnades of St. Peter’s Square. Above appear “HABEMUS PAPAM” and the date 19-04-2005, commemorating the day Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was elected pope. The opposite side displays Liberia’s national coat of arms with a three-masted sailing ship, sea, palm tree, rising sun, flying bird and plow, surrounded by decorative ribbons, the national motto and 10 Dollars denomination. Benedict XVI, a German theologian and former Archbishop of Munich and Freising, served as pope from 2005 until his historic resignation in 2013. With its religious symbolism, Vatican architecture and polished Proof surfaces, this silver issue is a compelling collectible for papal, Christian and world numismatic collections.
