The 1981 Lesotho 15 Maloti silver coin commemorates the 15th Anniversary of Independence, marking the period from 1966 to 1981 and celebrating the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Lesotho. Struck in Proof quality, this impressive commemorative combines royal portraiture with a powerful bird motif. The obverse features King Moshoeshoe II in formal military uniform, shown wearing glasses, a decorated peaked cap, braided epaulettes, cords and military decorations, surrounded by the country designation and 1981 date. Moshoeshoe II served as Lesotho’s monarch during the formative decades following independence. The reverse is dominated by a large eagle descending with wings dramatically spread, individually modeled feathers, extended talons and lowered head. Beneath the bird appears the national motto ribbon, while the 15 Maloti denomination and anniversary dates 1966–1981 complete the design. A striking silver Proof combining monarchy, independence, national history, heraldic symbolism and wildlife imagery.
