A new coin.
The 1988 Latvia 1 Ounce Independence Legation Series X#5a silver coin commemorates the 70th anniversary of Latvia’s proclamation of independence in 1918. Certified PCGS PR67, this historic Proof issue combines national symbolism with the distinctive character of Latvian exile numismatics. One side depicts Riga’s Freedom Monument, crowned by the female figure of Liberty raising three stars above her head. A large sun with long radiating rays fills the background, while the dates 1918 and 1988 mark the anniversary. The opposite side presents Latvia’s national coat of arms in detailed relief: a shield containing a rising sun, lion and griffin, supported by a heraldic lion and winged griffin. Three stars crown the shield, while oak branches, leaves, ribbon, central knot and tassels form an elaborate base; the denomination 1 OUNCE appears below. Produced as part of the Legation Series during the Soviet period, this silver piece reflects the preservation of Latvian statehood traditions abroad. Its historical theme, Freedom Monument and rich heraldry make it a distinctive collectible.
