The 1988 Latvia 1 Ounce Independence Legation Series X#5b bronze coin commemorates 70 years since the proclamation of Latvian independence in 1918. Certified PCGS PR66DCAM, this Government in Exile issue combines historic symbolism with strong Deep Cameo presentation. One side depicts Riga’s Freedom Monument, with the standing female figure of Liberty raising three stars high above her head. Behind the monument is a dramatic radiant sun with long linear rays, accompanied by the anniversary dates 1918 and 1988. The opposite side presents Latvia’s national coat of arms in elaborate relief: a shield bearing a rising sun, lion and griffin, supported by a heraldic lion and winged griffin. Three stars appear above, while oak branches, leaves, ribbon, knot and tassels enrich the lower composition around the 1 OUNCE denomination. Produced during the Soviet era, the Legation issue reflects the continuation of Latvian statehood traditions abroad. Its bronze surface, Freedom Monument, national heraldry and certified Proof grade make it a fascinating historical collectible.
