A new coin.
The 1988 Latvia 1 Ounce “Independence” Cu-Ni coin is a Government in Exile issue commemorating the 70th anniversary of Latvia’s 1918 declaration of independence. Certified NGC PF68 Ultra Cameo, it combines historical symbolism with a strongly patriotic design. One side depicts the Freedom Monument in Riga, crowned by the female figure of Liberty holding three stars above her head. A large radiant sun spreads long rays across the background, while the dates 1918 and 1988 mark the anniversary. The opposite side presents Latvia’s elaborate national coat of arms: a quartered shield with rising sun, lion and griffin, supported by a heraldic lion and winged griffin, with three stars above and oak branches, ribbon and decorative elements below. The denomination appears as 1 OUNCE. Produced during the Soviet period as a Latvian Government in Exile issue, the piece reflects the preservation of Latvian statehood and independence traditions abroad. Its political history, Freedom Monument imagery, heraldry and certified Proof quality make it a fascinating collectible.
