Latvia 1 Lats 2010 “Duke Jacob – 400th Anniversary” is a silver Proof commemorative honoring Jacob Kettler, Duke of Courland and Semigallia, born in 1610. The obverse presents an elegant right-facing portrait of the Duke with long wavy hair, period clothing, richly textured collar and draped mantle. A Latin-style circular legend, the anniversary dates 1610–2010 and denomination 1 LATS surround the portrait, all enclosed by a beaded border. The reverse is dominated by the elaborate historical coat of arms of Courland and Semigallia: a quartered shield filled with heraldic lions and deer, a smaller central shield, ornate mantling, helmets and crests, including a rearing horse and crowned lion, with additional heraldic emblems above. Duke Jacob ruled Courland during its 17th-century economic flowering, encouraging shipbuilding, manufacturing and overseas trade. Struck in .925 silver with a Proof finish and limited mintage of 5,000, this richly detailed issue combines portraiture, heraldry and Baltic history in an impressive collectible.
