The 1997 Laos 1000 Kip Endangered Wildlife silver coin celebrates the saola, an exceptionally elusive forest mammal native to the Annamite Mountains of Laos and Vietnam. The wildlife side presents two long-horned saolas in a lush natural habitat: one stands alert beneath a leafy branch, displaying its long nearly parallel horns, while the second lowers its head to drink from a small stream among rocks. Ferns, broad tropical plants, grasses, shrubs and scattered vegetation create a richly detailed forest scene, framed by “ENDANGERED WILDLIFE” and the 1997 date. The opposite side features the national emblem of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic with a central stupa, road, cultivated fields, trees, rice ears, cogwheel and ribbon, together with the 1000 Kip denomination. The saola was scientifically documented only in 1992 and became an important symbol of threatened Southeast Asian biodiversity. Struck in silver with impressive Proof surfaces, this distinctive wildlife issue is an excellent addition to collections of rare animals, conservation themes and Asian numismatics.
