The Laos 5,000 Kip 1999 Saint Thomas Aquinas silver issue honors one of the most influential philosophers and theologians of medieval Europe. The main design presents Thomas Aquinas in Dominican robes, holding an open book symbolizing scholarship and theological learning. A radiant sun emblem appears upon his chest, while beside him rises a detailed medieval church with masonry walls, doorway, circular window and tall bell tower. His name, the dates 1225–1274 and the issue year 1999 complete the composition. Thomas Aquinas was an Italian Dominican friar whose writings united Aristotelian philosophy with Christian theology; his Summa Theologica became a cornerstone of Western scholastic thought. The reverse displays the national emblem of Laos: the Pha That Luang stupa, roadway and surrounding landscape framed by curved rice stalks, ribbon and cogwheel, with the 5,000 Kip denomination below. Struck in silver with a brilliant collector finish, this unusual issue combines philosophy, religion, architecture and Lao numismatics.
