A new coin, a capsule.
The 2008 Laos 1000 Kip Qinghai–Tibet Railway silver Proof coin celebrates one of Asia’s remarkable high-altitude railway projects. The main side features a powerful diesel locomotive pulling passenger cars along the tracks, rendered with detailed cab windows, headlights, wheels, bogies and body panels. Behind the train rises a dramatic Tibetan mountain landscape with steep peaks, rocky slopes and vegetation. Above it, a schematic railway route marks Lhasa, Tanggula Pass and Golmud with stations and connecting track, emphasizing the extraordinary terrain crossed by the line. Opened throughout in 2006, the Qinghai–Tibet Railway connected Golmud with Lhasa across the Tibetan Plateau and includes the exceptionally high Tanggula Pass section. The opposite side displays the Lao People’s Democratic Republic national emblem with a central stupa, road, fields, trees, rice ears, cogwheel and ribbon, accompanied by the 1000 Kip denomination and beaded border. Struck in silver with reflective Proof surfaces, this 2008 issue is an attractive collectible for railway, locomotive, transport and engineering enthusiasts.
