The 2009 Laos 100,000 Kip KM-102 silver Proof coin commemorates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Souphanouvong, an important figure in modern Lao political history and the first president of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. The obverse features a detailed bust of Souphanouvong in a suit, shirt and patterned tie, with three decorations on his jacket and traditional ornamental motifs below. The reverse depicts a substantial two-story historic building with symmetrical windows, columns, central entrance, steps, architectural moldings and trees on both sides. French legends identify the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Souphanouvong centenary, while the denomination and Ag 925 silver fineness appear below. Born in 1909, Souphanouvong played a major role in twentieth-century Lao politics and served as president from 1975 to 1991. Certified PCGS PR67, this .925 silver Proof combines portraiture, political history and architecture in a distinctive commemorative issue.
