This India 50 Rupees commemorative coin was issued in 2002 to honor Sant Tukaram, one of the most revered poet-saints of Maharashtra and a leading figure of the Bhakti movement. Celebrated for his devotional poetry known as Abhangas, Tukaram inspired generations through messages of faith, humility, equality, and spiritual devotion. His literary and religious contributions remain an integral part of India’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
The reverse presents an intricate depiction of Sant Tukaram seated in a devotional pose, holding and playing a traditional tanpura (stringed musical instrument). He is shown wearing traditional attire and a turban, emphasizing his historical identity and connection to devotional music. The design includes bilingual inscriptions in Hindi and English reading “SANT TUKARAM”, along with the year 2002 and additional commemorative legends surrounding the portrait. The obverse features the Lion Capital of Ashoka, India’s national emblem, above the denomination 50 RUPEES, accompanied by the inscriptions “INDIA” and “भारत” and the national motto Satyameva Jayate.
Struck in copper-nickel and certified PCGS PR67 DCAM, this proof coin displays reflective mirrored fields and sharp frosted details. Combining literature, music, religion, and Indian history, it is an appealing collectible for numismatists and admirers of India’s rich spiritual traditions.
