The 1962 Indonesia Irian Barat 1 Sen KM-5 aluminum coin, certified PCGS MS64, is a remarkable historical issue connected to the administration of Irian Barat (West Irian) during a significant chapter in Indonesia’s national development. Struck in lightweight aluminum, this small-denomination coin reflects the monetary circulation and political identity of the period under President Sukarno.
The obverse presents a finely detailed left-facing portrait of President Sukarno, Indonesia’s first president and one of the leading figures of the country’s struggle for independence. He is depicted wearing a traditional peci cap, surrounded by the inscriptions “Presiden Republik Indonesia” and “Sukarno.” Decorative rosette symbols separate the legends, adding balance to the design. The reverse features the denomination “1 Sen” at the center, enclosed by an elegant wreath composed of a flowering vine with blossoms and leaves on the left and a laurel branch on the right. A tied ribbon joins the wreath at the base above the date 1962.
Certified by PCGS as MS64 Mint State, this aluminum KM-5 issue offers excellent preservation and strong eye appeal. Combining Indonesian history, a portrait of a major political leader, and an attractive minimalist design, it is an outstanding addition to collections of Indonesian, Asian, and world coins.
