The 2002 Guatemala 1 Quetzal KM-287 silver Proof coin commemorates Pedro de San José de Betancur, a 17th-century missionary and humanitarian closely associated with Guatemala. The reverse portrays Pedro in a monastic robe and cloak, holding a small bell and extending his other hand, with elaborate colonial church architecture, towers, façades and a cobbled foreground behind him. The surrounding Spanish text identifies the canonization theme and his name. The obverse displays Guatemala’s national emblem: a quetzal bird perched upon a scroll commemorating the country’s independence, crossed rifles and swords, and laurel branches, surrounded by the country name, denomination and 2002 date. Pedro de Betancur devoted his life to assisting the poor, sick and disadvantaged in colonial Guatemala and was canonized in 2002. Struck in silver with a refined Proof finish, KM-287 combines religious history, colonial heritage and national symbolism in an impressive collectible.
