This 25 bipkwele coin from Equatorial Guinea, issued in 1980, represents an important period of the nation’s post-independence coinage and features the portrait of President Francisco Macías Nguema. Struck in copper-nickel, it reflects both political history and national identity during the early years of the republic.
The obverse presents a right-facing portrait of Macías Nguema, with finely textured hair and defined facial features. Surrounding the portrait is the inscription “REPUBLICA DE GUINEA ECUATORIAL,” along with the date “1980” placed below between two small decorative stars. The raised rim frames the design, while the aged patina adds character and authenticity to the coin’s surface.
On the reverse, the denomination “25” dominates the left side, balanced by the national coat of arms on the right. The emblem features a silk-cotton tree within a shield, topped by a row of six stars and accompanied by a ribbon bearing the motto “UNIDAD, PAZ, JUSTICIA.” The word “BIPKWELE” is inscribed along the lower edge, completing the composition.
Produced at the Madrid Mint, this copper-nickel issue is a notable example of African republican coinage. Its historical significance and distinctive design make it a compelling addition for collectors of world coins and political-era numismatics.
