The set of copper-nickel commemorative coins of Gilbert Islands launched in 2015 is dedicated to the British vessels. The set consists of three 1-dollar items with different images. The obverse of each coin bears the Coat of Arms of Gilbert Islands along with country’s name and the year of issue. Being the former British colony, now the Gilberts have their own emblem as the independent state. The reverse depicts one of the glorious HMS Navy ships: Bounty, Mary Rose or Golden Hind. All the vessels have become maritime legends. The names of the ships are indicated above their images. The face value of the coin is struck under the image of a ship, although the coins are not the official means of payment and have only collection value.
