France 5 francs silver coin dated 1831, struck during the reign of King Louis Philippe I, the “Citizen King,” who came to power after the July Revolution of 1830. This issue reflects a transitional period in French history, when monarchy adapted to more liberal, constitutional ideals, making the coin both historically significant and symbolically rich.
The obverse features a refined right-facing portrait of Louis Philippe I, depicted with naturalistic facial details, short curly hair, and a composed expression. The surrounding inscription “LOUIS PHILIPPE I ROI DES FRANÇAIS” emphasizes his title as King of the French, rather than of France, highlighting the shift toward a ժողովրդի-based monarchy. The beaded rim frames the design, while the engraver’s signature is subtly placed below the neck.
On the reverse, the denomination “5 FRANCS” and the date “1831” are enclosed within a symmetrical laurel wreath tied with a ribbon at the base. The finely engraved leaves, berries, and bow create a balanced composition, while the mintmark “B” (Rouen Mint) and small control marks add further numismatic detail. The clean field and elegant layout enhance the classical aesthetic of the coin.
Struck in silver and graded AU58 by PCGS, this piece retains strong detail with light wear, making it an attractive example of early 19th-century French coinage. A valuable addition for collectors of royal portrait coins and European history.
