A medal with some scratches and oxides, a case (please, check photos).
This 1899 French silver medal commemorates the Exposition Universelle de Paris and honors the Société des Ingénieurs Civils, combining engineering, industry and international exhibition history. The richly modeled obverse, signed J. F. Contreras, is headed “MEXICO” and presents allegorical figures of labor and prosperity before monumental architecture, industrial structures and radiant sunlight. A seated male worker holds tools and extends a laurel branch toward a standing female figure carrying agricultural produce; an eagle, globe, machinery and the word “PAZ” complete the elaborate composition. The reverse bears “EXPOSITION UNIVERSELLE DE PARIS 1889” above a framed Société des Ingénieurs Civils inscription, surrounded by beautifully detailed laurel and oak branches tied with a ribbon. Created in silver with high-relief sculptural detail, this historical medal connects Mexico, France, civil engineering and the great Paris international exhibitions, making it a distinctive acquisition for collectors of medals, engineering history and 19th-century world expositions.
