This French bronze medal dedicated to Henri IV, dated 1817, commemorates the restoration of one of France’s most iconic royal monuments. Issued during the Bourbon Restoration, it celebrates the reinstallation of the equestrian statue of King Henri IV in Paris, symbolizing national unity and historical continuity after years of political upheaval.
The obverse presents a finely engraved right-facing portrait of Henri IV, depicted with a laurel wreath crowning his curly hair and a full beard, emphasizing his image as a wise and victorious ruler. His richly decorated armor and draped cloak feature intricate ornamental patterns. The engraving is signed “ANDRIEU F.” below the bust, while the smooth field and raised rim frame the composition with elegant simplicity.
On the reverse, a detailed equestrian statue of the king is shown mounted on a horse, standing atop a decorated pedestal. The base features miniature relief scenes, while the surrounding inscriptions read “HENRICO MAGNO” and “CIVIUM PIETAS RESTITUIT,” with the date “MDCCCXVII” below. The sculptor’s name “A. VADIER F.” appears to the side. Every element highlights the historical importance of the monument’s restoration.
Struck in bronze and certified by PCGS, this medal is a remarkable historical artifact combining artistry, symbolism, and French royal heritage. A compelling addition for collectors of historical medals and European history.
