A new token.
The Faroe Islands 25 Øre token issued by S. P. Petersen in Fuglefjord between 1929 and 1933 is a remarkable example of local exonumia, reflecting the everyday trade and private economic systems of the North Atlantic islands. Struck in brass and certified MS64 by PCGS, this piece combines historical significance with an authentic industrial aesthetic shaped by circulation and time.
The obverse presents a bold and compact layout with the denomination “25 ØRE” engraved at the top, followed by decorative horizontal flourishes and a small central rosette. Below, the inscription “S. P. PETERSENS EFTF” curves across the surface, identifying the issuer, while “FUGLEFJORD” is clearly stamped beneath, anchoring the token to its geographic origin. At the bottom, a small five-pointed star is flanked by short linear ornaments, all framed within the distinctive octagonal shape with clipped corners.
The reverse is intentionally plain, featuring a smooth field without imagery or inscriptions, emphasizing the utilitarian role of the token while showcasing the natural patina, oxidation spots, and surface texture of aged brass.
Graded MS64, this token stands as a scarce and collectible artifact of Faroese commerce, appealing to collectors of maritime regions, trade history, and unique local currencies.
