The set of eight souvenir coins of Tonga is dedicated to the World Food Day, an event which takes place in different places of the world since 1981. Many counties issue commemorative coins for the event as well. The set contains various thematic commemoratives issued by Tonga since 1981 till 2011. The denominations of the pieces are indicated in local currency called pa’anga and seniti. Most coins have the image of Tonga’s King Tupou IV on their obverses while the thematic images are placed on the reverse sides. Some coins of the set have different unusual shapes; they are made of different metal alloys, so have different colors. The emblem of the World Food Day is placed next to the image on each coin; the date of celebrating is 16 October, which is also mentioned. The images represent the themes of World Food Days of different years.
