The set of 8 non-precious souvenir coins is dedicated to Mayan culture, its picturesque script in particular. The coins are minted in metals of different colors, some are bimetallic. The Mayan symbols are shown on the coins with their meanings and transcriptions in Spanish placed under the images. The denominations of the coins are indicated in Mayan script as well. It’s understood, that these pieces are not a legal tender of any country, although the “currency” is centavos. The opposite sides of the coin contain the image of the mythical Mayan dragon-like ring-shaped creature. The central place is occupied by the face value in Spanish; the Spanish inscription along the lower rim reads “Central America – Mayan World” and the year of production. Maya’s script is the only ancient Mesoamerican writing which is currently deciphered.
