Benin 1500 francs, Buffalo, 2003

The commemorative coin of Benin was issued by the country’s government in 2003. The official currency of the country is united West African CFA franc, but there is not coin with denomination of 1500 francs among the XOF range. The 1500-franc coin of Benin shows the national features of the country. The coin bears the image of buffalo surrounded by the birds; the horns of the buffalo refer to the ones depicted on the Beninese Coat of Arms. The legends in French along the rim of the piece read the denomination, words “West Africa” and “Beninese emission” and the year of mintage. The opposite side shows the map of Western Africa with an elephant’s head in front of it. The French inscription along the rim here reads: “Monetary Issuance of the Institute of Development of West Africa”. There is “1 AFRICA” words on the same surface as well.
