The Ethiopia 5 Dollars silver coin issued in 1972 (KM-51) honors Empress Zewditu, one of the most remarkable figures in Ethiopian history and the first crowned empress of the modern era. This specimen, graded PR65 by PCGS, features a beautiful proof finish with deep mirrored fields and finely frosted relief, making it an elegant and historically significant collectible.
The obverse displays a refined left-facing portrait of Empress Zewditu wearing an ornate imperial crown decorated with intricate patterns and small raised elements. A long veil flows gracefully behind her head, while her attire is richly detailed with textured fabric, floral ornaments, and symbolic embellishments. The surrounding legends include Amharic script and the English inscription “ZEWDITU EMPRESS OF ETHIOPIA 1916–1930,” emphasizing her reign and legacy.
The reverse features the iconic Lion of Judah, crowned and striding forward with one paw raised. The lion holds a ceremonial staff topped with a cross and flowing ribbons, symbolizing monarchy, faith, and national identity. The detailed mane, muscular body, and ground beneath the lion are sharply rendered. Additional inscriptions in Amharic, the denomination “$5,” and the date “1972” complete the design.
Struck in silver with a classic proof quality, this coin combines historical importance, artistic craftsmanship, and collector appeal—an excellent addition to any world coin collection.
