The Ecuador ½ Décimo silver coin minted in 1915 represents an important issue of early twentieth-century Ecuadorian coinage and honors Antonio José de Sucre, one of the most prominent leaders of the South American wars of independence. A trusted lieutenant of Simón Bolívar, Sucre played a decisive role in the liberation of Ecuador, particularly through his victory at the Battle of Pichincha in 1822, which secured independence from Spanish colonial rule.

The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Antonio José de Sucre, depicted in a classical profile with carefully engraved facial features, short hair, and a moustache with trimmed beard. Surrounding the portrait is the inscription “REPUBLICA DEL ECUADOR,” while the year “1915” appears below. The design is framed by a delicate beaded border running along the rim.

The reverse shows the coat of arms of Ecuador, crowned by the majestic Andean condor with wings spread above the national shield. The shield depicts Mount Chimborazo, a river symbolizing the Guayas River, and a steamship representing navigation and trade. National flags, spears, and fasces surround the emblem. The inscriptions “1/2 D. DE SUCRE” and “0.9 H” indicate the denomination and silver fineness, with the mint mark “BIRM” at the bottom.

Graded PCGS MS62, this original silver circulation coin reflects Ecuador’s early republican history and is a desirable collectible for enthusiasts of Latin American numismatics.
