The 1910 Greenland 5 Øre Thule–Kap York token is a fascinating relic of Arctic exploration and early trade in northern Greenland. Issued for use at the Thule trading station founded in 1910 by Danish-Greenlandic explorer Knud Rasmussen, these tokens helped facilitate commerce in one of the most remote regions of the world. The trading post near Cape York served as an important hub where local Inuit communities exchanged goods such as furs and supplies. Tokens like this were produced in limited numbers to support everyday transactions within the settlement.
The obverse displays the inscription “THULE KAP YORK” arranged around the rim, emphasizing the name of the Arctic trading station. A circular hole appears at the center of the piece, a practical feature often used in small tokens to allow them to be carried on cords or strings. Decorative six-pointed stars flank the inscription on both sides, while a beaded border frames the entire design.
The reverse shows the denomination “5” above the central hole and the year “1910” below it, the date marking the founding of the Thule station. The hole divides the denomination and date, creating a distinctive composition typical for this issue. A beaded rim surrounds the field, giving the token a balanced and utilitarian appearance.
Struck in aluminum and certified PCGS MS63, this rare Arctic trade token had a relatively small mintage of about 5,000 pieces. Its connection to polar exploration, remote Greenlandic commerce, and early 20th-century merchant token coinage makes it a highly intriguing collectible for specialists in Scandinavian and polar numismatics.
