The 1988 Czechoslovakia 500 korun silver commemorative coin was issued to mark the 125th anniversary of Matica Slovenská, one of the most important cultural and scientific institutions in Slovak history. Founded in 1863 in Martin, Matica Slovenská played a crucial role in preserving the Slovak language, literature, education, and national traditions during a period of cultural and political challenges. The obverse features a symbolic female figure dressed in traditional Slovak folk costume, wearing a distinctive ceremonial headdress and a flowing dress tied at the waist. In one hand she holds an open book, representing knowledge, scholarship, and literature, while in the other she raises a flowering branch, symbolizing cultural growth and national heritage. Decorative floral elements accompany the composition, and the commemorative dates 1863–1988 appear beside the figure. The inscription Matica Slovenská curves along the lower edge of the design.

The reverse displays the state emblem of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, featuring the heraldic lion holding a shield with a flame, crowned by a five-pointed star. Below the emblem appears the denomination 500 Kčs, while the inscription Československá socialistická republika surrounds the design.
