The 1984 Czechoslovakia 100 Korun silver commemorative coin honors the 300th anniversary of the birth of Matej Bel, a distinguished scholar, historian, priest, and educator of Central Europe. Struck in silver and certified MS67 by PCGS, this superb high-grade example reflects both cultural heritage and outstanding preservation.
The obverse features a sculptural depiction of a seated allegorical figure draped in classical garments, holding a book across the lap—symbolizing knowledge and scholarship. Behind the figure rises a vertical architectural element reminiscent of a column or monument. The inscription “MATEJ BEL” curves along the left side, while the dates “1684–1984” appear to the right, marking three centuries since his birth. The initials “JK” are visible below the composition.
The reverse displays the coat of arms of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic: a lion within a shield topped by a five-pointed star. The surrounding inscription reads “ČESKOSLOVENSKÁ SOCIALISTICKÁ REPUBLIKA,” with the denomination “100 Kčs” placed beneath the shield.
Matej Bel was a pioneering historian and polymath whose works documented the geography, culture, and history of the region. This MS67 PCGS silver coin is an exceptional collectible for those interested in education, Enlightenment-era scholarship, and certified world numismatics.
