The 1990 Czechoslovakia 100 korun silver coin honors the renowned Baroque painter Jan Kupecký, celebrated as one of Central Europe’s finest portrait artists. Active in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, Kupecký became famous for lifelike portraits of aristocrats, scholars, and cultural figures, distinguished by strong realism, psychological depth, and masterful handling of light. His legacy links Czech and Slovak cultural history with the wider Baroque art world.
The reverse features an expressive portrait of Jan Kupecký in period clothing, shown half-length with carefully modeled facial features and richly textured drapery. In his hands are the symbols of his craft: a painter’s palette and brushes, with additional brush tips and studio details visible near the lower edge. Along the field appears his signature-style name “Jan Kupecký,” while the dates “1740–1990” mark the commemorative theme as engraved on the coin. The obverse displays the state emblem of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic: a heraldic lion within a shield topped by a star, surrounded by the inscription “ČESKOSLOVENSKÁ SOCIALISTICKÁ REPUBLIKA,” and the denomination “100 Kčs.”
Struck in silver and certified by PCGS as MS68 Mint State, this high-grade coin is a strong choice for collectors of European art, portraiture, Baroque heritage, and Czechoslovak commemoratives.
