The 1984 Czechoslovakia 100 korun silver coin commemorates Matej Bel, a renowned scholar, priest, historian, and educator whose work significantly influenced the cultural and intellectual life of Central Europe. Issued by the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, the coin marks the 300th anniversary of his birth and honors his legacy as one of the most important scholars connected with the region.

The obverse depicts a dynamic sculptural composition featuring a standing male figure beside a seated allegorical female figure, symbolizing knowledge and learning. The standing figure raises an arm holding a banner or staff, while the seated figure holds an open book, emphasizing scholarship and education. Along the rim appears the inscription “MATEJ BEL,” and to the right of the figures are the dates “1684–1984.” The artistic style reflects monumental sculpture, with flowing drapery, carefully modeled human forms, and a strong sense of movement.

The reverse displays the national emblem of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. A heraldic rampant lion stands within a pentagonal shield and bears a smaller shield with a stylized flame on its chest. Above the shield appears a five-pointed star. Around the design runs the inscription “ČESKOSLOVENSKÁ SOCIALISTICKÁ REPUBLIKA,” with the denomination “100 Kčs” below the emblem.

Matej Bel (1684–1749) was a respected Lutheran priest, historian, linguist, and geographer often called the “Great Ornament of Hungary” for his scholarly work documenting the history, geography, and culture of Central Europe.

Struck in silver with a Proof finish and certified PR66 by PCGS, this coin is a beautiful commemorative piece and an excellent addition for collectors interested in European history, scholars, and classic Czechoslovak numismatics.
