The 1972 Czechoslovakia silver medal commemorates the 100th anniversary of the death of Andrej Sládkovič (1820–1872), one of the most prominent Slovak Romantic poets and a key figure of national literature. His epic poem Marína remains a cornerstone of Slovak cultural heritage, symbolizing love, patriotism, and poetic idealism.
The obverse presents a dignified portrait of Andrej Sládkovič facing slightly right, with carefully modeled facial features, flowing hair, and a formal coat collar. The years 1872 and 1972 are placed on either side of the portrait, marking the centenary. His name appears boldly below, accompanied by decorative linden branches and the number “100,” with a small mint mark beneath. The reverse features a large heraldic shield bearing the stylized Czech lion, surrounded by the inscription of the Czechoslovak state. At the bottom, an architectural motif of arches and towers evokes historic national landmarks.
Struck in silver, this commemorative medal combines literature, national symbolism, and refined artistic design. A meaningful and collectible tribute to Slovak poetry and cultural identity.
