The 1972 Czechoslovakia 100 Korun silver commemorative medal marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of sculptor Josef Václav Myslbek, one of the founders of modern Czech monumental art. Issued in silver, this artistic piece celebrates a master whose sculptures became enduring national symbols.
The obverse features a powerful left-facing portrait of Myslbek with a distinctive beard and sharply modeled profile. Above his head are the dates 1872–1972. To the right, inside a circular medallion framed by concentric lines, appears an allegorical female figure in flowing drapery accompanied by two children—one raising an object, the other in motion—reflecting Myslbek’s classical inspiration and mastery of form. The lower field bears the inscription “SOCHAŘSTVÍ J. V. MYSLBEK” and the denomination “100.”
The reverse displays the Czechoslovak coat of arms: a crowned lion within a shield, encircled by the inscription “ČESKOSLOVENSKO.” At the bottom, a stylized architectural motif of four vertical pylons linked by a horizontal line adds a modern decorative accent.
Myslbek is best known for the monumental statue of Saint Wenceslas in Prague, a landmark of Czech identity and statehood. This medal is an excellent collectible for lovers of sculpture, fine art, and Czechoslovak cultural heritage.
