The city of Veliky Novgorod is one of the oldest settlements of Eastern Slavs and the Princely state of the Kievan Rus’. There are many ancient buildings in Novgorod, but the religious center of the city and the symbol of the old Novgorod Republic is the Cathedral of St. Sophia. It was built in XI century and is an example of the early Orthodox architecture. It became the first East Slavs’ church which showed the difference from Byzantine patterns. The Cathedral is depicted on the gilded coin-like token in relief with the rising sun on the background. The semicircular ribbon below the effigy bears the name of the city in Russian. The opposite surface of the medal shows the Russian emblem and the name of the state below it. There are ornamented borders on the both sides of the round token.
