The Costa Rica 5 Céntimos 1976 “State Coinage” KM-184.2 is a beautifully preserved Proof issue struck by the Banco Central de Costa Rica. Though a small denomination, this coin embodies the country’s national symbolism and clean republican design typical of late 20th-century circulation coinage.
The obverse features the detailed Coat of Arms of Costa Rica, surrounded by a fine beaded border. The central shield displays three volcanic mountains rising above the sea, a sailing ship navigating the waters, and a radiant sun emerging on the horizon. Five stars arch above the peaks, representing the provinces, while ornate scrollwork frames the shield. The inscriptions “REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA” and the date “1976” encircle the design.
The reverse presents the denomination “5 CENTIMOS” centered within a symmetrical laurel wreath tied neatly with a ribbon at the base. The legends “AMERICA CENTRAL” and “B.C.C.R.” are clearly struck, with denticles along the rim completing the balanced composition.
Struck in copper-nickel with a sharp Proof finish and certified PCGS PR68, this coin exhibits reflective mirror fields and frosted devices. A high-grade example of Costa Rica’s state coinage, ideal for collectors of Central American numismatics.
