The Costa Rica 300 Colones 1981 silver Proof coin commemorates the Bicentennial of the Founding of the City of Alajuela and honors Gregorio José Ramírez, an important historical figure associated with the region’s civic legacy. This impressive issue reflects both local pride and national identity, combining portraiture with rich heraldic symbolism.
The obverse features a finely sculpted portrait of Gregorio José Ramírez in high relief, surrounded by the inscription “BICENTENARIO FUNDACION CIUDAD DE ALAJUELA.” The dates 1782 and 1982 appear at either side of the portrait, marking the bicentennial celebration. His name, “GREGORIO JOSE RAMIREZ,” is inscribed below, all framed by a beaded border that enhances the coin’s Proof brilliance.
The reverse displays the detailed coat of arms of Costa Rica: three volcanoes rising above the sea, a sailing ship, radiant sun rays, five stars, and elegant scrollwork banners reading “REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA” and “AMERICA CENTRAL.” The legend “REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA” encircles the rim, with the denomination “TRESCIENTOS COLONES,” the year 1981, and “LEY 0.925” indicating silver fineness.
Struck in .925 silver in Proof quality and certified PCGS PR69, this coin is a superbly preserved commemorative honoring Costa Rican heritage. A distinguished addition for collectors of historical, city-themed, and Latin American silver issues.
