A new coin.
The 1976 Costa Rica 1 Colón BCCR KM-186.4 is a refined proof issue struck for the Banco Central de Costa Rica and certified PR68 by PCGS. This CuNi coin represents regular coinage of the period, elevated by sharp proof surfaces and elegant cameo contrast.
The obverse features the national coat of arms of Costa Rica: three majestic volcanoes rising above a calm sea, symbolizing the country’s geography, with a merchant ship sailing in the foreground. Decorative scrollwork frames the shield, while seven small stars above represent the provinces. The inscription “REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA” encircles the design, with the date “1976” below, all bordered by a delicate beaded rim.
The reverse displays the denomination “1 COLON” at center, surrounded by a symmetrical laurel wreath tied with a ribbon at the base. The inscriptions “AMERICA CENTRAL” and “B.C.C.R.” emphasize the issuing authority and regional identity, with precise lettering and mirrored fields characteristic of proof quality.
Struck in copper-nickel and preserved in PCGS PR68 condition, this coin stands out for its crisp details and collectible appeal. A beautiful example of Costa Rican numismatics, it is an excellent addition for collectors of Central American coinage and certified world issues.
