Costa Rica Republic Token “N” – Rulau CR63 – Bronze – ND (circa 1848) – PCGS MS65. This scarce early Costa Rican token, cataloged as Rulau CR63, represents an important chapter in the monetary history of the young Republic during the mid-19th century. Privately issued tokens such as this circulated locally at a time when official coinage was limited, making them highly collectible historical artifacts.
The obverse features a bold capital letter “N” centered within a finely detailed laurel wreath tied at the base with a ribbon. The border is decorated with a beaded rim, giving the piece a classical medallic appearance. The reverse displays the coat of arms of Costa Rica with a central shield, flanked by laurel branches and crowned with radiant sun rays above, symbolizing sovereignty and independence. The fine engraving and balanced layout reflect early republican design aesthetics.
Struck in bronze and preserved in superb Mint State condition, this example is certified PCGS MS65, offering sharp details, original luster, and excellent eye appeal. Early Latin American tokens in such high grade are increasingly difficult to locate. A remarkable addition for collectors of Central American exonumia and historic republican issues.
