The Costa Rica 50 Centimos 1893 silver coin (KM-159) is a classic late-19th-century issue, notable for its crisp Central American styling and the coveted Heaton (Birmingham) mint signature. Struck during a formative era of Costa Rica’s monetary system, this piece blends national symbolism with elegant period engraving.
The obverse shows the Costa Rican coat of arms within a beaded border: a central shield crowned by radiating spears, with laurel branches below. Around the rim is the legend “REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA,” and the date “1893” sits at the bottom. Natural circulation wear is visible, consistent with the assigned grade.
The reverse features the denomination “50 CENTIMOS” in the center, framed by a graceful olive wreath tied with a ribbon. A small five-pointed star appears at the top, while “AMERICA CENTRAL” runs around the upper rim. Along the right side, the vertical mint inscription “9 Ds HEATON BIRM” highlights production by the famous British mint. Certified PCGS AU53, this historic silver coin is an excellent choice for collectors of Central America, classic world silver, and Heaton-minted issues.
