The Costa Rica 5 Colones 1970 “New Carthage” KM-191 silver Proof coin commemorates the 400th anniversary of the founding of Cartago (1564–1964), the historic colonial capital known as Nueva Cartago. This issue honors Juan Vázquez de Coronado, the Spanish conquistador and governor who played a key role in establishing the city.
The obverse features a detailed portrait of Juan Vázquez de Coronado, shown in period armor with a ruffled collar and trimmed beard. Surrounding inscriptions read “IV CENTENARIO FUNDACION DE CARTAGO,” “JUAN VAZQUEZ DE CORONADO,” and the commemorative dates “1564–1964.” The denomination “5 COLONES” appears below, along with a beaded border framing the design.
The reverse displays the national coat of arms of Costa Rica: three volcanic mountains rising above the sea, a sailing ship in the foreground, radiant sun rays at the horizon, and five stars above. Decorative scrollwork surrounds the shield. Legends include “REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA – AMERICA CENTRAL” and “1970 – BCCR.”
Struck in silver with a Proof finish and certified PCGS PR63, this coin combines colonial history, national identity, and numismatic artistry. A significant commemorative for collectors of Latin American and exploration themes.
