The Costa Rica 3000 Colones San Juan Hospital KM-234 silver coin, issued in 1994, commemorates the 150th Anniversary of Hospital San Juan de Dios, founded in 1845. This institution became one of the pillars of Costa Rica’s public healthcare system and was officially recognized as an “Institución Benemérita” for its outstanding service to the nation.
The reverse presents a refined architectural view of the hospital building: a symmetrical façade with a prominent central section, tall arched windows on the upper level, rectangular windows aligned across both wings, a detailed cornice, and a central arched entrance doorway. Surrounding inscriptions read “150 ANIVERSARIO,” the dates “1845” and “1995,” and “Institución Benemérita,” along with “HOSPITAL SAN JUAN DE DIOS.” The obverse features the national coat of arms of Costa Rica with three volcanoes, a rising sun, ocean waves, a sailing ship, five stars above the mountains, and ornate scrollwork. Legends include “REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA,” “AMERICA CENTRAL,” and “B.C.C.R. TRES MIL COLONES 1994.”
Struck in silver in deep mirror Proof quality and certified PCGS PR69, this coin displays sharp frosted relief against glossy black fields. A superb collectible celebrating medicine, architecture, and Costa Rican national heritage.
