Cook Islands 5 Dollars 2009 “Great Commanders – Maj. Gen. George G. Meade” silver coin honors the Union general who secured victory at the decisive Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. George Gordon Meade (1815–1872) led the Army of the Potomac during one of the most critical turning points of the American Civil War, stopping the Confederate advance into the North.
The reverse is dominated by an intense high-relief battlefield panorama: Union soldiers advancing with rifles and bayonets, artillery cannons firing, large wagon wheels, battle flags waving above dense formations, fallen troops, and smoke rising across rolling terrain. At right appears a colorized portrait of Maj. Gen. George G. Meade in dark military uniform with gold buttons and high collar. The inscriptions read “MAJ. GEN. GEORGE G. MEADE 1815–1872,” “1863 ★ BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG,” and the year “2009.” The obverse features a right-facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with crown, framed by “ELIZABETH II COOK ISLANDS” and the denomination “5 DOLLARS.”
Struck in silver with proof-like fields and detailed relief, this historical issue combines artistry and military heritage. An impressive addition for collectors of Civil War memorabilia, battlefield history, and world silver commemoratives.
