The Cook Islands 5 Dollars 2010 silver coin from the Russian Icons series is dedicated to St. Sergius of Radonezh, one of the most revered spiritual leaders of medieval Rus, founder of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius and a symbol of faith, unity and monastic devotion.
The rectangular reverse presents a richly colored icon of St. Sergius with a calm, ascetic expression, blessing with his right hand and holding a scroll in his left. He wears a monastic robe adorned with crosses, and a radiant golden halo encircles his head. Above, within clouds, a small depiction of the Holy Trinity is shown. The composition is framed by an ornate border of intricate floral and geometric scrollwork with gilded corner ornaments. The year “2010” appears along the side, and Cyrillic inscriptions identify the saint.
The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, with the inscriptions “COOK ISLANDS,” “5 DOLLARS,” and “ELIZABETH II.”
Struck in .925 silver with a Proof finish and enhanced with selective gilding and color, this coin is a striking tribute to Orthodox sacred art and an exceptional addition to any religious or world coin collection.
