The Cook Islands 5 Dollars 2009 “Europe Grandmasters – Jan Matejko” silver coin is a remarkable tribute to one of Poland’s greatest historical painters. Jan Matejko (1838–1893) became famous for his monumental canvases depicting dramatic moments from European history, shaping national identity through art.
The reverse features a richly colored fragment of one of Matejko’s historical compositions, showing expressive figures in dynamic poses. A central bearded figure in a red robe raises his arm, surrounded by detailed characters in period garments. Above the scene appears the year 2009, while along the left vertical edge is the inscription “GRANDMASTERS OF EUROPE.” At the bottom, “JAN MATEJKO 1838–1893” is clearly engraved. A real pearl insert in the upper right corner adds elegance and symbolic refinement to the design.
The obverse presents a rectangular panel with the right-facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, framed by “COOK ISLANDS,” “5 DOLLARS,” and “ELIZABETH II.”
Struck in silver in Proof quality with color application and pearl insert, this coin blends fine art and numismatics. An exceptional collectible for admirers of European painting, art history, and unique world silver issues.
